Remote support preparation

Download the support app

Before your session with Dave, you'll need to download a small application called Splashtop SOS. This page explains exactly what it does — and exactly what it doesn't.

Nobody can access your device without your permission

This is the most important thing to understand about Splashtop SOS. Access is controlled entirely by you, at every step.

You hold the key

When you open Splashtop SOS, it displays a unique nine-digit code on your screen. That code is generated fresh every time you open the app. Without you reading that code to Dave, there is no connection — no exceptions. Dave cannot find your computer or connect to it in any other way.

You can see everything

While Dave is connected, you can see exactly what he is doing on your screen at all times. Your screen is shared — not hidden. You are always watching. If you want to end the session for any reason, simply close the Splashtop SOS app and the connection stops instantly.

Nothing stays behind

Splashtop SOS is not an installed program. When your session ends and you close the app, it is finished. There is no background process, no scheduled access, and no way for anyone — including Dave — to reconnect to your computer without you opening the app again and sharing a new code.

How it works on the day

The whole process takes about two minutes. Here is exactly what to expect.

1

Download Splashtop SOS from this page

Use the download button below. The file is small — it takes under a minute to download on most connections. You do not need to create an account or enter any personal details.

Available for Windows and Mac. If you're unsure which version you need, Dave can confirm when he calls.

2

Open the app at your session time

You don't need to open it until Dave calls. At your booked session time, Dave will phone you. He'll ask you to open the Splashtop SOS app you've already downloaded.

On Windows, find it in your Downloads folder. On Mac, it will be in your Downloads folder or on your Desktop.

3

Read Dave the nine-digit code

When Splashtop SOS opens, a nine-digit number appears in the centre of the screen. Read that number to Dave over the phone. That's the only thing you need to do — Dave handles the rest of the connection from his end.

The code changes every time you open the app, so it can't be reused.

4

Dave can now see your screen

Once connected, Dave can see what's on your screen and help you directly — pointing things out, making changes with your permission, and walking you through whatever you need. You can see everything he does as it happens.

5

Close the app when you're done

When your session is finished, simply close the Splashtop SOS window. The connection ends immediately and completely. Dave can no longer see your screen or access your computer in any way.

You can also delete the downloaded file after your session if you prefer — though keeping it makes it easier to find for your next session.

Common questions

Is this safe to download?
Yes. Splashtop is a legitimate, established software company used by millions of people. The SOS product is widely used by IT professionals and support services globally. If you'd like to verify this independently, search for "Splashtop SOS" in any search engine and you'll find extensive information about the company and product.
Can Dave access my computer whenever he likes?
No — and this is by design. Splashtop SOS only allows a connection when you open the app and share the nine-digit code. Without that code, there is no way to connect. The code changes every time you open the app. Once you close the app, the session is over and cannot be resumed without a new code from you.
What if I accidentally close the app during the session?
No problem — just open it again and read Dave the new code that appears. The session can pick up right where it left off. Dave will still be on the phone with you throughout, so he can guide you through reopening it if needed.
Does it work on iPhone or iPad?
Splashtop SOS is available for Windows and Mac computers. If your question involves your iPhone or iPad, Dave can still help you — he'll talk you through steps over the phone while watching on your computer if needed, or guide you verbally. If your session is primarily about an iPhone or iPad issue, let Dave know when you book and he'll advise the best approach.
I'm nervous about this — is there another way?
That's completely understandable — and it's a sensible instinct to be cautious about anything involving your computer. If you'd prefer, Dave can talk you through things verbally over the phone without screen access. Remote screen access simply allows him to work faster and more accurately, but it is never required. Mention your preference when you book and Dave will accommodate it.
Will it slow down my computer?
No. Splashtop SOS is a lightweight application that runs only while it's open. It does not install itself, does not run in the background, and has no ongoing effect on your computer's performance.
